Will "Rocketman" Live Up to "Bohemian Rhapsody?"

Biopics, as of recent, have been floating along the mainstream with big blockbusters such as Hidden Figures, I Tonya, and, the jewel of the winter movie releases, Bohemian Rhapsody. In the same vein, we now have the upcoming film, Rocketman to look forward to.

In the same way Bohemian Rhapsody was both a celebration of the work of Queen and a character study of lead singer Freddie Mercury, Rocketman is a celebration of an arguably, equally influential voice, Elton John. The similarities between the two artists are striking. Freddie Mercury and Elton John are both praised for their iconic songwriting abilities, incredible vocal range, and contributions to the LGTBQ community, being queer men themselves.

Both films also share the same director, Dexter Fletcher. The film stars Taron Egerton, of Kingsman fame, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard. It has been noted that the film is a biopic, but also carries the flavor of a fantasy musical which is appropriate given the notable theatrics of Elton John’s stage performances.

Overall with the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, it is not difficult to assume that Rocketman will be another smash hit and another musical, biopic notch on the belt of its esteemed director. The film clearly endeavors to pay homage to man who endured both great triumph and great heartache throughout his life and rose above it all to become an icon and inspiration to people across the world.
